England pubs granted extended hours as Norway quarter-final faces storm delay
Pubs and bars in England and Wales will be permitted to stay open for 30 minutes after the final whistle if tonight's World Cup quarter-final against Norway in Miami is delayed by thunderstorms, the government has confirmed.
Pubs and bars across England and Wales have been granted extended licensing hours for tonight’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway in Miami, with the government confirming venues can remain open until 30 minutes after the final whistle — regardless of any weather-related delay.
Thomas Tuchel’s England side are scheduled to kick off at 10pm BST, but thunderstorms and heavy rain are forecast in Florida, raising the prospect of a postponement similar to the round-of-16 win over Mexico, which was pushed back by an hour due to lightning at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
The licensing extension means that even if the match is held up, goes to extra time, and reaches a penalty shootout, supporters watching in pubs will be able to see the full contest without venues being forced to close. The government made a comparable late decision ahead of the Mexico match, allowing pubs to remain open until 5am for that fixture.
AccuWeather forecasts a high of 33°C in Miami around kick-off, with a ‘Real Feel’ temperature exceeding 40°C and a 50% chance of rain. Under the rules of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), matches must be halted if lightning or electrical discharge is detected within an eight-mile radius of the stadium, making a delay a genuine possibility rather than a remote one.
The 10pm BST start time already pushes the match deep into the night for fans at home, and any significant hold-up could see the final whistle fall well past 1am. The licensing flexibility gives pubs and bars showing the game the room to accommodate whatever schedule the Florida weather dictates.
