Manchester United are weighing up legal and regulatory action against parties who might negotiate or facilitate the exit of teenage midfielder JJ Gabriel, according to a report by The Sun, as the 15-year-old continues to train at a Barcelona facility this week.

Gabriel informed the club of his desire to leave Old Trafford last month, catching United off guard. The 2010-born England Under-17 international had been in line to become the club’s youngest-ever first-team appearance-maker before the Carabao Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur, but he has not featured for the club since his intentions became known.

United still believe the situation could be resolved, with time remaining on Gabriel’s contract. However, the teenager cannot be de-registered without mutual consent from all parties. Once he turns 16 next week, his Irish passport would allow him to enter negotiations for a move overseas, with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich among the clubs reported to be interested. Should he ultimately move abroad, United would receive only a modest compensation fee.

Gabriel’s representative, Ali Barat of Epic Sports, received permission from the Football Association to represent minors after the player’s desire to leave emerged. The agency has a track record of facilitating high-profile moves, having arranged Denzel Dumfries’ transfer to Real Madrid and Nicolas Jackson’s move to Aston Villa last summer. Discussions with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have since been arranged on Gabriel’s behalf.

Gabriel’s most recent appearance for United came in a 5-0 UEFA Youth League victory over Sabah last month. He has been training this week at the same Barcelona facility where he previously worked ahead of pre-season.

United Under-18s head coach Michael Carrick urged caution when asked about the situation last month. “He’s a young boy, it’s important we don’t put anything out here — the exposure and scrutiny we have to be careful,” Carrick said. “We have to be sensible and think about him. The situation will work itself out.”
