Kane chases Shilton's England cap record as Tuchel flags burnout risk in Nations League schedule
Harry Kane, on 123 caps, is set to start against Croatia and could equal Peter Shilton's all-time England record of 125 appearances before the international window closes. Manager Thomas Tuchel has cautioned that the compressed Nations League schedule — four games in 11 days — raises the injury risk for players.
Harry Kane is on course to equal Peter Shilton’s England appearance record of 125 caps before the current international window ends, but manager Thomas Tuchel has warned that the cramped Nations League fixture schedule is placing players under unusual physical strain.
Kane, who holds 123 caps, is set to start against Croatia and has declared himself “good to go” for a third England match in a week. Should he feature against the Czech Republic on Tuesday as well, he would draw level with Shilton’s long-standing record.
Tuchel confirmed the Bayern Munich striker will play, but used his pre-match briefing to raise broader concerns about the toll of international windows on players. England face four fixtures in 11 days — a schedule the head coach believes creates conditions more hazardous than a typical club run of games.
“Harry wants to play and he will,” Tuchel said. “The players just want to go again because they have a three-day turnaround in between matches. A match can be so different — the match against Spain was the highest intensity in the output of some players. The match against ten men was a totally different story. We took care of some players after 70 minutes. So Harry is good to go.”
Tuchel argued that the danger lies less in the number of matches and more in the disruption to routine. “It’s the travelling. It’s different training. It’s different training times that the players are used to. I think this increases the risk more than the pure match itself.”
He drew a comparison with club football’s own congested periods. “If you have in club football a Saturday-Tuesday, it’s very unlikely that you have another Saturday-Tuesday. It’s very likely that you have Saturday-Wednesday, and it just makes a big difference. A Wednesday would decrease the risk of injury dramatically.”
The concerns are not theoretical. Premier League clubs have already seen players pick up injuries during this extended window, and midfielder Nico O’Reilly has been sent home from the England camp due to injury.
Kane’s pursuit of Shilton’s record — set between 1970 and 1990 — adds a historic dimension to what is otherwise a routine Nations League camp. At 31, the striker has shown no signs of slowing down at international level, and Tuchel’s comments suggest there is no intention to rest him unless circumstances demand it.
