Manchester United are monitoring Freiburg playmaker Johan Manzambi as a potential summer signing, with reports valuing the 20-year-old at around £43 million — and the Belgian’s World Cup form is making it increasingly difficult to ignore him.

Manzambi has scored three times in Switzerland’s group-stage campaign, including the decisive goal in a 2-1 victory over co-hosts Canada earlier this week. The performance underlined why the versatile attacker has attracted attention from clubs across Europe ahead of the transfer window closing.

United have yet to formally complete their first summer signing, though they are understood to have agreed terms to bring Atalanta goalkeeper Ederson to Old Trafford for an initial £35 million, with a further £3.8 million in add-ons. Manzambi represents a separate line of inquiry as the club looks to strengthen further.

One notable endorsement for Manzambi came from Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany, who spoke glowingly of the player back in April. “People always thought that England had snapped up a lot of quality from Germany,” Kompany said. “But what’s happening in Germany now? You’ve got players like Suzuki, Manzambi or El Khannouss on the pitch. There’s a new generation of top talent emerging in Germany.”

That assessment was made before Manzambi’s World Cup exploits, which have only strengthened his standing. Across 47 appearances for Freiburg last season, the Belgian-born Swiss international contributed seven goals and nine assists — numbers that reflect both his creative output and his consistency at club level.

With Switzerland advancing to the knockout rounds, Manzambi will have further opportunities to impress potential suitors before any deal is concluded. Whether United move to formalise their interest before the window shuts remains to be seen.
