Manchester United are pursuing at least three new signings this summer, with Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall emerging as a priority target as the club prepares for a return to the Champions League.

Hall, 21, has been admired by figures within United’s hierarchy and is described as a player they could look to act on if the opportunity arises. With Tyrell Malacia set to leave Old Trafford and Patrick Dorgu expected to operate in a more advanced role, Luke Shaw is currently the only senior left-back on the books — and he is out of contract next year. Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui can provide cover but are not natural fits for the position.

Fulham’s Antonee Robinson is also under consideration. The 28-year-old, who represents host nation the United States, is expected to attract significant interest during the World Cup. The imminent appointment of a new head coach at Craven Cottage could also put Robinson’s six-year spell at the club in doubt.

Reports earlier this month suggested Hall had submitted a transfer request to Newcastle following a reported falling-out with manager Eddie Howe. However, those claims have been disputed, with sources close to the situation indicating the pair ended the season on good terms.

United are also in the market for a back-up goalkeeper. Andre Onana, who returned from a loan spell at Trabzonspor, is not expected to be given the opportunity to compete for the number-one shirt in pre-season. Altay Bayindir is another likely departure following Senne Lammens’ impressive debut campaign, while returning loan goalkeeper Radek Vitek — who spent the season at Bristol City — is also expected to move on.

In midfield, United continue to explore additions despite having already secured the signing of Atalanta’s Ederson. Mateus Fernandes has been touted as a possibility, with contact reportedly made with the Portuguese midfielder’s representatives in recent days. However, West Ham are believed to be demanding around £85 million for the 23-year-old — more than double the £42 million they paid for him a year ago. The Hammers need to raise funds following their relegation to the Championship, and Fernandes’ former club Southampton hold a 15 per cent sell-on clause on any future sale.
