Man United fans to replace Stretford End display with protest banner at Manchester derby

Manchester United supporters’ group The Red Army will stage a visible protest during Sunday’s Manchester derby at Old Trafford, replacing their customary Stretford End flag display with a single banner above the players’ tunnel that reads: “The way you treat us is a disgrace.”

The demonstration is a direct response to United’s investigation into ticket touting, which resulted in 685 season ticket bans and a further 464 reduced sanctions or final warnings. The club said it had identified 1,617 accounts showing “unusual activity”, with bans upheld in 499 cases by an independent appeals panel, while 113 holders failed to respond to requests for information and 73 did not appeal.

In a statement, The Red Army framed the banner as a collective message rather than a group-specific one. “This isn’t a ‘TRA’ message, it’s a message on behalf of every genuine fan group, match-going supporter, supporters’ club and fan representative who has either contacted us directly or been negatively impacted by the recent behaviour of the club,” the group said. “It’s an honest, heartfelt cry for recognition from the maligned, vilified, and misrepresented beating heart of our football club — the generational match-going supporters.”

The group also broadened their criticism beyond Old Trafford, describing the issue as “a league-wide crisis that should be addressed at every club, regardless of rivalries and history,” and warning that without structural change, the traditional match-going culture faces an existential threat.

A separate supporters’ group, 1958, also called on fans to “stand united” against what it described as the “season ticket ban fiasco”, urging supporters to gather outside the Bishop Blaize pub near Old Trafford at 3pm ahead of the derby.

United defended the investigation in their own statement, saying bans were issued only where there was “significant misuse of the ticketing system for financial gain”, including the operation of “organised ticketing networks controlling, selling and distributing tickets from hundreds of accounts.” The club said it had prioritised protecting genuine supporters’ access to tickets.

The Red Army called on the club to ensure match-going supporters are placed at the centre of its fan engagement process going forward.
