Malacia exit leaves Manchester United scrambling for left-back cover this summer
Tyrell Malacia will depart Manchester United when his contract expires at the end of June, deepening a left-back crisis at Old Trafford. With Luke Shaw the only recognised option and two transfer targets already ruled out, Newcastle's Lewis Hall has emerged as the leading candidate.
Tyrell Malacia will leave Manchester United at the end of June when his contract expires, the club has confirmed, leaving Ruben Amorim’s side short of reliable options at left-back heading into the summer transfer window.
The Dutch international made just 15 minutes of Premier League football last season, though he appeared on the bench 28 times as cover for Luke Shaw. Malacia has spent much of his time at Old Trafford recovering from a serious knee injury and is now eager to secure regular first-team football elsewhere to rebuild his career.
His departure means Shaw is United’s only recognised left-back. The England international started every Premier League game last term but has a well-documented history of fitness problems, and there is concern within the club over his ability to sustain a two-games-a-week schedule. Shaw has one year remaining on his contract, with a decision on an extension expected to be made during the course of next season.
Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui offer some positional cover, but neither is a natural fit. Dorgu has impressed in a more advanced wide role and looks set to be used there, while Mazraoui is primarily a right-back.
United had identified targets to address the position this summer, but two early options have effectively closed. Nathaniel Brown is set to join Bayern Munich, while Myles Lewis-Skelly has established himself in Arsenal’s midfield rather than at left-back, removing him from realistic consideration.
That has left Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall as the frontrunner. The 21-year-old is understood to be on United’s radar, though his stock at St James’ Park is uncertain after he was dropped for Newcastle’s final game of the season in favour of Dan Burn. Hall also missed out on England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
United’s need to recruit at left-back this window now looks clear, with the depth behind Shaw insufficient for a club competing across multiple competitions.
