Mike Maignan wants to leave AC Milan just four months after extending his contract until June 2031. Gazzetta dello Sport reports that the French international goalkeeper has expressed his desire to move elsewhere to the club’s management.

Two factors explain this change of heart. The first is the dismissal of Massimiliano Allegri, whose departure was poorly received by Maignan. The coach is expected to join Naples. The second is AC Milan’s disappointing season, finishing fifth in Serie A and missing out on qualification for the next UEFA Champions League.

Maignan, who will turn 31 on July 3, intends to take time to reflect after the FIFA World Cup he is about to play with the French national team. His performances at the tournament could prove decisive in attracting a top-tier buyer.

AC Milan has no intention of selling their goalkeeper cheaply. Arriving from Lille in summer 2021 for just over 16 million euros, Maignan is currently valued at around 20 million on the market, but the Lombard club is demanding between 40 and 50 million to let him go. A gap that immediately complicates any negotiation.

Potential destinations remain unclear: starting goalkeeper positions at major European clubs are rare, and no concrete leads have emerged so far. The situation should become clearer after the World Cup.
