Mahrez announces international retirement and leaves Al-Ahli within 48 hours
Eliminated with Algeria by Switzerland in the 2026 World Cup round of 16, Riyad Mahrez announced the end of his international career and then terminated his contract with Al-Ahli two days later. At 35, his next club remains unknown.
Riyad Mahrez turned the page in two stages. On Thursday, following Algeria’s elimination by Switzerland (2-0) in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, the 35-year-old winger declared on the spot that it was “his last match” in international football. On Saturday, Al-Ahli officially confirmed the end of their partnership, ending three seasons of the player in Saudi Arabia.
With the Fennecs, Mahrez leaves a record of 120 caps, 40 goals and 38 assists. Born in Sarcelles, he wore the Algerian shirt for twelve years, notably winning the Africa Cup of Nations 2019. In announcing his departure, he asked supporters and media to “leave the new generation alone”.
On Al-Ahli’s side, the Jeddah club paid tribute to three years of the former Manchester City player, who will have played 122 matches in their colours, scored 37 goals and provided 46 assists. He also contributed to two AFC Champions League titles (2025 and 2026) as well as a Saudi Super Cup (2025).
No information has emerged about the rest of his club career. Mahrez remains one of the most decorated African players of his generation, and his simultaneous departure from the national team and Al-Ahli marks a clear break with two major chapters of his career.
