Maguire urges Man United to sign more players ahead of Champions League return
Harry Maguire has called on Manchester United to strengthen their squad this summer, warning that the club will need more depth to handle the demands of competing in the Champions League alongside the Premier League next season.
Harry Maguire has called on Manchester United to bring in more signings this summer, insisting the squad lacks the depth required to compete across the Champions League and the Premier League simultaneously next season.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast with Gary Lineker, the centre-back reflected on a dramatic turnaround in United’s fortunes after Michael Carrick replaced the sacked Ruben Amorim in January. Carrick won 12 of his 17 games in charge, guiding the club from 15th place to a third-place finish and securing a return to European football’s top tier.
“We had a great end to the season and finished where we aimed for at the start of the season,” Maguire said. “I know the club wants to win titles but to have been 15th and losing the Europa League final, I think everyone thought it was so poor that we’d find it tough to bounce back — but the points difference was massive. This is not where we stop, we need to kick on and challenge for the big titles.”
Maguire acknowledged that Carrick benefited from a lighter schedule, with United’s early Europa League exit leaving the Premier League as their sole focus for much of the second half of the campaign. That luxury will not be available next season.
“We need more bodies now we’re in the Champions League,” he said. “We know it’ll be a lot tougher playing two, three times a week.”
United have already agreed a deal with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson. The club are also targeting two central midfielders, a left-back, and a striker, though further activity in those areas is reported to be dependent on available funds.
Maguire himself was absent from England’s World Cup squad, making his public comments on United’s direction all the more pointed as he looks to rebuild both his club and international standing heading into a pivotal summer.
