Harry Maguire has been convicted of speeding for the second time in 2025, with the Manchester United defender fined £1,000 at Tameside Magistrates’ Court after admitting he drove at 37mph in a 30mph zone in Altringham, Greater Manchester. Two of his United team-mates, Altay Bayindir and Matheus Cunha, were prosecuted for separate speeding offences at the same time.

The incident involving Maguire, 33, occurred on December 28 last year on Hale Road — the route between Old Trafford and his Cheshire home. Alongside the fine, he received three penalty points on his licence and must pay £120 in costs and a £400 victim surcharge. It follows a 56-day road ban handed to him in January 2025 for earlier speeding offences.

In a written apology submitted to the court, Maguire said: “I was driving at 37mph in what I mistakenly believed was a 40mph zone, when it was in fact a 30mph limit. I understand this was my responsibility and I fully accept the offence. I will be more careful in future and pay closer attention to speed limit signs.”

The conviction came as Maguire was already dealing with a significant professional setback. England manager Thomas Tuchel omitted the centre-back from his 26-man squad for the World Cup, with Maguire posting on social media that he had been “left shocked and gutted” by the decision.

Reserve goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, 28, was caught driving a Mercedes at 41mph in a 30mph limit in the Greater Manchester village of Hale Barns on November 24 last year — around an hour after United had lost 1-0 to Everton in the Premier League. Bayindir pleaded guilty to the offence and has since been called up for Turkey’s World Cup campaign.

The third United player facing legal proceedings is Brazilian striker Matheus Cunha, 27, who has been charged with both speeding and failing to respond to police letters asking him to identify the driver of the vehicle. Court papers show a Mercedes registered in Cunha’s name was clocked at 37mph on the same stretch of Hale Road where Bayindir was caught, within hours of United’s 1-0 opening-day Premier League defeat to Arsenal on August 17 last year. Police say Cunha did not respond to requests to identify the driver, resulting in the additional criminal charge.
