Magomedsharipov ends seven-year absence with decision over UFC featherweight Zalal at ACBJJ 22

Zabit Magomedsharipov ended a seven-year competitive absence at ACBJJ 22 in Istanbul’s Ora Arena on 30 August 2026, defeating UFC featherweight Youssef Zalal by unanimous decision in a grappling match. The result marked the Russian’s first time back in competition since his UFC win over Calvin Kattar in 2019.

The match was competitive throughout. Zalal, visibly frustrated with the judges’ verdict, had finished strongly against Magomedsharipov, though the former UFC contender also had his moments across the bout. The unanimous decision ultimately went to the returning Russian.

Magomedsharipov had originally been scheduled to face Raul Rosas Jr. at ACBJJ 21 the previous month, but withdrew due to injury. His appearance at ACBJJ 22 represented the first time the 18-1 fighter had stepped onto any competitive stage since his MMA retirement.

Despite being widely regarded as one of the most talented featherweights never to compete for a UFC title, Magomedsharipov formally retired from MMA in 2022 after a prolonged stretch in which several high-profile matchups failed to materialise following his win over Kattar. Known for his flashy striking and well-rounded grappling, he remains one of the sport’s most discussed what-ifs.

Speaking ahead of the Zalal match, Magomedsharipov was candid about his decision to walk away, directing pointed criticism at the UFC’s handling of his career.

“I have no regrets about leaving the sport and not winning anything,” he told Red Corner MMA. “Of course, I wanted to become UFC champion, but it fell through. They didn’t let me. They were stalling for time. They didn’t let me fight.”

Whether Saturday’s grappling appearance signals a broader return to competition for Magomedsharipov remains unclear, but the performance demonstrated that his skills have not diminished significantly during his extended time away from the sport.
