Magomedsharipov backs Nurmagomedov to rebound after Song's 'lucky punch' KO

Zabit Magomedsharipov has defended Umar Nurmagomedov following his shock knockout defeat to Yadong Song at UFC Shanghai on 29 August, calling the finishing blow a “lucky punch” rather than evidence of any fundamental weakness.

Nurmagomedov, who entered the main event as a heavy favourite, suffered the first stoppage loss of his professional career when Song dropped him with a right uppercut in the second round. The defeat was only the second of Nurmagomedov’s career and effectively removed him from immediate bantamweight title contention.

Magomedsharipov addressed the result at the ACBJJ 22 press conference, where he was preparing for a submission grappling bout. The former UFC featherweight contender was measured in his assessment, arguing that flash knockouts are an occupational hazard for every fighter regardless of skill level.

“I believe Umar will be back. I see no problem there,” Magomedsharipov said. “Anyone can experience that. It is what it is. I think it was bad luck. He was well prepared for the fight and I think it was a lucky punch. It may happen to anyone and no one is safe there.”

The result has reshuffled the bantamweight picture considerably. Song used his upset victory to call for a title shot, positioning himself as a contender for the belt set to be decided at UFC 333, where Petr Yan and Merab Dvalishvili are scheduled to meet for the championship.

For Nurmagomedov, the loss ends a run that had made him one of the most anticipated prospects in the division. Magomedsharipov’s public support will offer some comfort, though the Dagestani fighter now faces the task of rebuilding his title credentials from outside the top contender conversation.
