Olympique de Marseille could pay dearly for recruiting its new sporting director. Grégory Lorenzi, officially named to succeed Medhi Benatia, had previously given his agreement to OGC Nice, and this reversal now exposes the Phocaean club to legal proceedings before the labor court.

At 42 years old, Lorenzi had established himself as one of the major architects of Stade Brestois’s rise over the past decade. OM recruited him to build a competitive squad despite financial constraints linked to the deficit accumulated under Frank McCourt’s management. But before even starting this project, the Corsican executive finds himself at the heart of a dispute that goes beyond his person alone.

According to information from Ouest-France, the case should soon be decided before the labor court, and the trend would be unfavorable to Marseille. The newspaper describes an OM « clearly at fault », liable to be ordered to pay heavy damages to Nice.

Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivère had indicated he was informed of discussions between OM and Lorenzi, but he believed this Marseille interest was conditional only on a possible relegation of the Gym to Ligue 2. With Nice ultimately retaining its top-flight place after its playoff against Saint-Étienne, the Côte d’Azur club considers that Lorenzi remained committed to them — a position that now forms the basis of its complaint and strengthens its legal standing.

The outcome of this proceeding could worsen an already fragile financial situation for OM, which will have to manage this dispute while building its squad for the upcoming season.
