Liverpool have dispatched scouts to the World Cup to assess Colorado Rapids teenager Lucas Herrington, with the Reds joining Barcelona in monitoring the 18-year-old centre-back who has drawn significant European interest this season.

Herrington arrived at Colorado from Brisbane Roar and quickly established himself as one of MLS’s most promising defenders, earning a place in Australia’s 26-man World Cup squad. Liverpool have kept close tabs on him throughout the season and have now sent representatives to North America for a first-hand look, according to Metro.

The competition for his signature is already fierce. The Athletic reports that Barcelona have gone a step further, submitting an opening bid for Herrington that Colorado Rapids have turned down. The Spanish club’s interest underlines just how quickly the teenager’s reputation has grown beyond MLS.

Herrington himself has been careful to keep his focus on the present. “I just want to keep enjoying it, taking it day by day,” he said. “I’m not really thinking too far in the future. It’s just Colorado, and now just focusing on the World Cup. That’s where my focus is at the moment; we’ll see what happens after that.”

Those who have watched him closely in the United States have been effusive in their praise. Colorado Rapids president Padraig Smith said earlier this year: “He is an exceptionally talented young man with the world at his feet. When our scouts identified him, and we began the recruitment process, we knew he had a high ceiling.”

Former Arsenal defender Rob Holding has also weighed in, describing Herrington as “super composed, super relaxed, on the ball, under pressure. He’s a really good player. He just keeps getting better and better each week.”

Australia are set to face Paraguay in their next World Cup group fixture, a match in which Herrington could make his tournament debut. A win would secure the Socceroos a place in the last 32, giving the teenager another high-profile stage on which to impress the clubs tracking him.
