Liverpool sack Arne Slot after fifth-place finish as Van Dijk calls for accountability
Fenway Sports Group have dismissed Arne Slot following a fifth-place Premier League finish, with reports citing a lack of identity and intensity in Liverpool's play. Captain Virgil van Dijk has called on players to step up and take responsibility.
Liverpool have sacked head coach Arne Slot after a season that ended in a fifth-place Premier League finish, with Fenway Sports Group concluding he had taken the club as far as he could. FSG’s CEO of football Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes made the decision following an end-of-season review.
Slot arrived at Anfield having won Liverpool their 20th top-flight title in May 2025, but the season that followed unravelled sharply. According to The Athletic, the owners felt Liverpool’s performances lacked tempo and intensity, with the team playing what was described as a “dull brand of football” that created a “mood of negativity at Anfield.” Twenty defeats across all competitions eroded supporter trust, and the boos that greeted Slot after a draw with Chelsea earlier this month proved emblematic of the deteriorating atmosphere.
The report also points to alarming dips in form from key players including Ibrahima Konate, Cody Gakpo, and Alexis Mac Allister as contributing factors in the owners’ thinking. The combination of poor results, a loss of tactical identity, and growing discord in the stands left FSG with little reason to continue with the Dutchman.
Club captain Virgil van Dijk, speaking in Liverpool’s ‘Walk On’ magazine before the sacking was confirmed, made clear that a response was required from within the squad. “I think it is an opportunity for other players to step up,” Van Dijk said. “It is not just an opportunity; it has to happen and it will happen. I’m not worried about that.”
“It’s just taking responsibility. I think we have plenty of players that have those traits in them. And it’s now down to them and down to the manager to make sure it comes out, take their responsibility and enjoy it and embrace it as well because it’s an absolute privilege to lead.”
Whoever succeeds Slot will inherit a squad capable of winning the Premier League, as proven just twelve months ago, but one that has since shown a troubling capacity for inconsistency. The task of restoring both the football and the atmosphere at Anfield will be considerable.
