Liverpool hold £70m Quansah buy-back clause as Konate exit deepens defensive crisis

Liverpool negotiated a £70m buy-back clause when they sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen in summer 2025, with that figure dropping to £52m if activated in 2027. The option is gaining relevance following Ibrahima Konate's confirmed departure on a free transfer.

Liverpool retain a structured buy-back clause for centre-back Jarell Quansah, valued at £70 million, following his sale to Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025. The clause drops to £52 million if Liverpool choose to activate it in the summer of 2027 rather than the current window.

Quansah, an academy graduate who has since earned England recognition, has impressed in the Bundesliga since his move to Leverkusen, prompting renewed interest from Anfield in a potential return. The tiered structure of the buy-back gives Liverpool flexibility, though the £70 million price tag this summer may make the option difficult to justify given competing priorities.

The urgency around Liverpool’s defensive recruitment has sharpened considerably after the club confirmed that Ibrahima Konate will leave on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of June. Negotiations over an extension broke down due to a disagreement over wages and valuation, ending a five-year spell at the club that included a Premier League title.

Konate’s exit leaves a significant gap in Liverpool’s backline. Captain Virgil van Dijk is entering the final year of his current deal, which runs until the summer of 2027, adding a further layer of long-term uncertainty at centre-back. Beyond van Dijk and Joe Gomez, the club’s senior options are limited, with the squad otherwise relying on youth prospects and recent signings.

Liverpool did move to address their defensive depth in January, signing Rennes teenager Jeremy Jacquet for approximately £50 million. The Frenchman is expected to be available for first-team consideration this summer, though whether he is ready to fill the void left by Konate immediately remains to be seen.

With the Quansah buy-back potentially too costly to trigger this window, Liverpool face pressure to identify alternative centre-back targets before the new season begins.
