Giorgi Mamardashvili has been convicted of using a handheld mobile phone while driving after being caught watching a video on his phone on the M6 motorway on 27 January. The Liverpool goalkeeper was sentenced at Warrington Combined Court on Friday to a £440 fine, six penalty points on his licence, £120 in costs, and a £176 victim surcharge.
PC Ree of Cheshire Police described in a written statement how he spotted Mamardashvili’s black Audi travelling in lane two of the southbound M6 between Junctions 23 and 21 at around 3.45pm, despite lane one being clear. Drawing level with the vehicle, the officer noticed the driver holding his phone near the centre of the steering wheel and appearing to watch something on the screen while travelling at motorway speed.
“When it was safe to do so, I stopped the vehicle on the hard shoulder and I got out to speak with the driver who was the sole occupant of the vehicle and I asked the male to sit in the rear of my police vehicle,” PC Ree wrote. The stop was also recorded on the officer’s bodyworn camera.
Mamardashvili, 25, identified himself with a Georgian driving licence. He did not respond to the police prosecution notice, and his case was handled through the Single Justice Procedure — a private hearing used for lower-level offences. No plea was entered, and he was found guilty on the strength of the written police evidence alone.
The Georgian international joined Liverpool in 2025 and has made 20 appearances this season, recording three clean sheets while deputising for injured first-choice goalkeeper Alisson.
Mamardashvili was among 247 motorists across England and Wales prosecuted in the same week for using a handheld phone while driving, with fines across those cases totalling more than £41,000.
