Leao signals Premier League openness as Manchester United weigh summer move
AC Milan forward Rafael Leao has said the Premier League would bring out the best in his game, with Manchester United among the clubs linked to the Portugal international ahead of a potential summer transfer.
Rafael Leao has publicly expressed his desire to move to the Premier League, telling Portuguese outlet Sport TV that the English top flight suits his style of play — a statement that lands amid reported interest from Manchester United in the AC Milan winger.
“I need a new challenge. I already won two trophies in Italy and have been there for a while,” Leao said. “The league is evolving, but for my style of football, I think the Premier League or La Liga would make more of my talent, as a player.”
He went further, adding: “If a Premier League opportunity were to come along, I would be very happy. I think that I can put my talent up against the players there, who are of a very high level. Playing in that kind of a league really gets the best out of a player.”
United are not alone in their reported interest. Arsenal and Galatasaray have also been mentioned as potential destinations for the 25-year-old in recent weeks. Reports from earlier in the summer suggest Milan have lowered their asking price, with the Italian club said to be willing to accept around £43 million for the forward.
Leao scored 10 goals across 31 appearances for Milan last season — nine of them in Serie A — as the club finished fifth in the Italian top flight, narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification.
United’s transfer activity this summer is already under way, with Atalanta midfielder Ederson expected to become the club’s first signing after a £38.8 million deal was agreed with the Serie A side, comprising a £35 million initial fee and £3.8 million in add-ons.
Whether United pursue Leao may depend in part on the future of Marcus Rashford, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona. The England international’s situation for the coming campaign remains unresolved, and his status could shape United’s priorities in the forward line.
Midfield and left-back are currently considered the club’s most pressing areas for reinforcement as they prepare to return to the Champions League next season.
