Koundé suffers thigh issue, but availability for Senegal clash not in doubt
France's right-back sustained a muscular problem during the friendly against Northern Ireland (3-1) last Monday. His participation in the World Cup opener on June 16 against Senegal is not under threat.
Jules Koundé has been carrying a thigh problem since the friendly match against Northern Ireland (3-1), played last Monday, five days before France’s World Cup 2026 campaign begins against Senegal on June 16. The FC Barcelona defender left the pitch at half-time, replaced by Didier Deschamps.
The injury does not appear to be concerning the French staff, however. According to information from the French camp, there is no doubt about Koundé’s participation in the first group match, even if he could miss a training session in the coming hours. The Blues train daily until the encounter against the Lions of Terranga.
In the event of prolonged unavailability — a scenario ruled out at this stage — Didier Deschamps would have alternatives on the right flank. Warren Zaïre-Emery occupied this position for much of the season at Paris Saint-Germain during Achraf Hakimi’s injury absence, and would constitute the most natural backup option.
The 2026 World Cup officially began this Thursday with the opening match between Mexico and South Africa. France will wait until June 16 to play its first match of the competition.
