Kalidou Koulibaly delivered a mixed performance in Senegal’s opening match against France (1-3), reigniting questions about his physical condition following an injury and shortened preparation.

The Lions of Teranga had made a strong start, dominating France during a productive first half. But after the break, Senegal’s defence crumbled against the pace of Kylian Mbappé and Michael Olise. It was in this context that Koulibaly’s performance came under close scrutiny, having been surprisingly named in the starting lineup despite his recent return to competition.

According to Sene News, while the defender’s leadership and positioning remain beyond question, his ability to sustain maximum intensity over 90 minutes raises concerns internally. “Opposing accelerations highlighted a loss of reactivity in certain phases,” the source notes, clarifying that the Senegal coaching staff is reasoning more in terms of physical load management than intrinsic level.

Former France international Alain Giresse, consultant for Afrik-Foot during this World Cup, tempers the discussion somewhat. “We weren’t asking the question at half-time, at 0-0,” he recalls. “Koulibaly lacked rhythm, he suffered against Mbappé, but he’s an essential and experienced player, and if Pape Thiaw played him, it’s because he considered him completely fit.”

The question will become even more pressing on Monday, against Norway and its tall strikers Erling Haaland and Alexander Sørloth — a radically different profile from the French, but one that will demand flawless defensive solidity. Manager Pape Thiaw’s decision will be closely watched, as Senegal, defending Africa Cup of Nations champions, cannot afford a second group-stage defeat.
