Kosovo youth international Fatjon Bunjaku, 22, dies in road crash as federation mourns 'great talent'
Fatjon Bunjaku, a 22-year-old footballer who represented Kosovo at U19 and U21 level, died on Sunday following a collision on the Mitrovica–Pristina road in the village of Maxhunaj. The Football Federation of Kosovo has paid tribute to the 'educated, dedicated and ambitious boy'.
Fatjon Bunjaku, a 22-year-old footballer who had represented Kosovo at youth international level, died on Sunday morning after a serious road collision on the Mitrovica–Pristina road in the village of Maxhunaj, Kosovo. Two other people were also involved in the crash.
All three individuals were rushed to hospital, but Bunjaku — believed to have been the driver — could not be saved. A police statement confirmed: “Around 07:50, the University Clinical Hospital Service of Kosovo received a notification that, despite the efforts of medical personnel, the driver of the vehicle, a 22-year-old male victim, had died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.”
The Police Spokesperson for the Mitrovica Region, Avni Zahiti, confirmed that investigators from the Regional Traffic Unit are working to establish the cause of the crash.
The Football Federation of Kosovo responded with an emotional statement, with president Agim Ademi expressing his condolences on behalf of the federation and the wider football community. “With deep pain and great sorrow, we received the news of the tragic and untimely passing of your dearest friend, Fatjon Bunjaku,” Ademi said.
The federation’s tribute described Bunjaku as far more than a footballer. “He was an educated, dedicated and ambitious boy, who with his work, character and love for football managed to gain the respect of all those who were lucky enough to know and work with him,” the statement read.
“His contribution to the clubs where he played and his appearances with the Kosovo U21 jersey will remain part of the precious memories of our football. Fatjoni proudly represented the colours of Kosovo and was an example of an athlete who always aimed to move forward.”
Bunjaku had represented Kosovo at both U19 and U21 level, and the federation described his death as a loss felt across the entire country’s football community. “Kosovar football lost a great talent, while his family, friends and teammates lost a loved one, who left an indelible mark on their hearts.”
