Ezri Konsa is set to undergo a medical at Arsenal after the Gunners agreed a deal worth in the region of £50 million plus add-ons with Aston Villa for the England international centre-back.

Arsenal are not expected to complete registration in time for Konsa to feature in their Premier League opener against Coventry City on Friday, with his fitness also requiring further work after Unai Emery granted him four full weeks of rest alongside Ollie Watkins and Emi Martinez following the World Cup. That timeline opens the possibility of Konsa making his Arsenal debut at Villa Park — the ground he has called home for seven seasons — when the two clubs meet on August 31.

Mikel Arteta had identified the 28-year-old as his top defensive priority this summer despite interest in alternatives including Jarell Quansah, Cristian Romero and free agent John Stones. Konsa, who can also operate at right-back, is viewed as a plug-and-play addition that strengthens Arsenal’s depth, particularly given William Saliba’s absence with a long-term back problem.

The move did not come easily. Arsenal’s initial £30 million approach earlier in the summer was immediately rejected by Villa, who held firm on a £60 million asking price. The Gunners returned last week and communicated a willingness to reach £40 million, but it was ultimately Konsa himself — with two years remaining on his contract — who forced the issue by making clear he was determined to return to London, where he previously played for Brentford and Charlton Athletic.

Konsa grew up supporting Tottenham but pushed for the Arsenal move after his extended post-World Cup break, turning down a lucrative new contract offer from Villa in the process.

He is on course to become Arsenal’s fifth summer signing, following Piero Hincapie (whose loan from Bayer Leverkusen was made permanent), goalkeeper Illan Meslier, winger Christos Tzolis and midfielder Bruno Guimaraes — the latter arriving for £75 million. The quintet would take Arsenal’s summer outlay to approximately £194.5 million.

Konsa’s status as a homegrown player also carries a practical benefit for Arsenal: registering eight homegrown players in their squad will allow the club to officially name a full 25-man Premier League roster. Winger Gabriel Martinelli currently qualifies as homegrown but remains a potential departure before the transfer deadline.

His sale continues a significant summer of outgoings at Villa Park. Youri Tielemans has joined Manchester United, Morgan Rogers has moved to Chelsea, and Lucas Digne has departed for PSG. Watkins and Martinez are also facing uncertain futures, with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal having made three bids for Watkins — all of which have been turned down to date.
