Maguire urges Manchester United to keep Rashford and sign more players before window shuts
Harry Maguire has called on Manchester United to retain Marcus Rashford and continue strengthening their squad, even at the cost of his own starting place, with the Premier League season less than three days away.
Harry Maguire has publicly urged Manchester United to keep Marcus Rashford at Old Trafford and bring in further signings before the transfer window closes, with the club’s Premier League opener against Hull City now less than three days away.
United have had an unusually quiet summer, adding just three first-team players: midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £50 million, Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35 million, and goalkeeper Karl Darlow from Leeds United. No arrivals have followed that initial flurry, despite Maguire’s calls for more activity.
The England centre-back praised the club’s early business but made clear he wants the squad pushed further. “Hopefully more are coming through the door,” he said. “As a player I want a big competitive squad — one that we can go and challenge for the big trophies, so the more the merrier.”
Maguire has since doubled down on that position, insisting he welcomes competition for his own place in manager Michael Carrick’s backline. “I’m at an age now where they can bring in as many as they want, bring in all the best players,” he said. “I want to win all the trophies and be greedy about it, but it’s up to the club.”
On Rashford, Maguire was equally direct. The 28-year-old forward featured for United in a pre-season friendly against AC Milan — his first appearance for the club since late 2024 — amid ongoing uncertainty over his future. Carrick has yet to confirm whether Rashford will remain for the new season, but Maguire left no doubt about where the dressing room stands. “As players, we hope he stays because if he does, he is a big asset,” the defender said.
With Santos impressing in pre-season and Tielemans bringing Champions League pedigree from his time at Aston Villa, United’s midfield looks considerably stronger than last term. Whether Carrick moves to address the forward line before the window shuts remains the key question hanging over the club as the season kicks off.
