Ismael Kone has been ruled out of the remainder of World Cup 2026 after fracturing his tibia and fibula during Canada’s 6-0 win over Qatar at BC Place in Vancouver. The midfielder underwent successful surgery on Friday to repair the lower limb fracture, Canada Soccer confirmed, and is expected to make a full recovery.

Kone was stretchered off in the second half after a challenge from Qatar’s Assim Madibo. Referee Cristian Garay initially issued a yellow card for the foul before reviewing the incident and upgrading it to a red card, sending Madibo off.

Three surgeons attended to Kone on the pitch before he was taken for treatment. Canada Soccer released a statement on Friday confirming the outcome: “Last night, Ismael Kone underwent successful surgery to repair a lower limb fracture. He is expected to make a full recovery but will miss the remainder of the FIFA World Cup 2026.”

The injury cast a shadow over what was a historic night for Canada, whose 6-0 victory marked the country’s first-ever win at a FIFA World Cup. The result was a landmark moment for the host nation, but the loss of Kone — one of their key midfielders — is a significant blow to their tournament ambitions.

Kone’s absence leaves Canada’s midfield short-handed as the co-hosts look to build on their opening result and advance through the group stage.
