Konate joins Real Madrid on a free as Liverpool's summer exodus continues
Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer, with the France centre-back joining on a four-year deal until 2030 after his Liverpool contract expired. He is the third Premier League player in a week to move to the Bernabéu, following Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva.
Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer, with the 27-year-old France centre-back agreeing a four-year contract at the Bernabéu until 30 June 2030. The deal ends his four-year stay at Anfield after Liverpool announced his departure upon the expiry of his contract.
Konate becomes the third Premier League player in the space of a week to commit to Real Madrid. Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella arrived in a £52m deal on Monday, while Bernardo Silva is set to follow as a free agent from Manchester City. The flurry of arrivals reflects the ambitions of recently re-elected president Florentino Perez, who has pledged to rebuild the squad after a second consecutive trophyless season.
Jose Mourinho is also returning to the club for a second spell as head coach, adding further weight to the sense of a wholesale reset at Real. The club did, however, fail in their pursuit of Argentina forward Julian Alvarez — Atletico Madrid rejected a reported £129m bid with a pointed public response.
Konate’s time at Liverpool brought considerable success. Signed from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021, he made 183 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals, and collected a Premier League title, an FA Cup, and two League Cups. Talks over a contract extension broke down midway through the season, and he confirmed in May that he would leave when his deal expired on 30 June.
His exit is part of a significant reshaping at Anfield. Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson, and head coach Arne Slot have all departed, with Liverpool finishing fifth in the Premier League last season — 25 points behind champions Arsenal. Andoni Iraola has been appointed as Slot’s successor, and the club have already agreed a £60m deal to sign 20-year-old French centre-back Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes as a replacement.
On the international stage, Konate was an unused substitute as France opened their World Cup 2026 qualifying campaign with a 3-1 win over Senegal on Tuesday, with Didier Deschamps preferring a central defensive partnership of Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba.
