Kompany hails £43m Man United target Manzambi as 'top talent' after World Cup heroics
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has praised Johan Manzambi as part of a 'new generation of top talent' in Germany, with Manchester United reportedly valuing the Freiburg playmaker at £43m amid his impressive World Cup campaign with Switzerland.
Manchester United’s reported interest in Johan Manzambi is gathering context, with Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany having already identified the 20-year-old Freiburg midfielder as one of Germany’s most exciting emerging talents — and Manzambi is doing little to dampen that reputation at the 2026 World Cup.
Manzambi has scored three goals in the group stage for Switzerland, including the decisive strike in a 2-1 victory over co-hosts Canada earlier this week. Reports have suggested Freiburg value the versatile playmaker at around £43 million, with United among the clubs credited with an interest.
Kompany, speaking in April via Goal, was already tracking Manzambi closely before the transfer speculation intensified. “People always thought that England had snapped up a lot of quality from Germany,” the Belgian said. “But what’s happening in Germany now? You’ve got players like Suzuki, Manzambi or El Khannouss on the pitch. There’s a new generation of top talent emerging in Germany.”
Manzambi’s club form last season supported that assessment: the Belgian-born Switzerland international registered seven goals and nine assists across 47 appearances for Freiburg, establishing himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most productive young players.
United have yet to officially complete their first signing of the summer, though they have agreed a deal to bring Atalanta midfielder Ederson to Old Trafford for an initial £35 million, with a further £3.8 million in add-ons. Whether Manzambi follows remains unclear, but his World Cup performances are ensuring he stays firmly on the radar of clubs across Europe as the knockout rounds approach.
