Klopp urges FSG to give Iraola time as Liverpool face another tactical overhaul
Jurgen Klopp has called on Fenway Sports Group to show patience with incoming Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, drawing on his own turbulent early years at Anfield as a reminder that meaningful change takes time.
Jurgen Klopp has urged Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, to back Andoni Iraola with patience as the Spaniard prepares to overhaul a side that struggled for consistency under the recently dismissed Arne Slot.
Slot’s departure came just over a year after he guided Liverpool to the Premier League title — a timeline that drew implicit criticism from Klopp, who noted that he himself was afforded room to navigate 14 defeats across all competitions in the 2022/23 season before completing his own tactical evolution at Anfield.
Klopp, 59, had already addressed the challenge facing his successor when Slot took charge in the summer of 2024. “Change always has an impact. And change always needs time,” he said. “People need time to adapt. It’s all good.” Those remarks have resurfaced with fresh relevance now that a second managerial change in quick succession is under way.
The transition from Slot to Iraola represents a sharper stylistic break than the shift from Klopp to Slot. Where the Dutchman leaned into a possession-based, measured approach that frustrated supporters accustomed to relentless pressing, Iraola built his Bournemouth side on exactly the kind of high-intensity, finely-tuned defensive structure that defined Liverpool’s most successful years under Klopp. Moulding the current squad to that template will take time.
Klopp’s broader point — that Liverpool’s players need a settling-in period regardless of how well-suited Iraola’s methods may ultimately prove — carries weight given the turnover in personnel at the club. “Now the new guys are there, and they are really good players. It’s just not working out at the minute,” he said, referring to the difficulties Slot encountered. “Development needs time. Nobody can change that.”
For FSG, the implicit message is clear: the cost of impatience may outweigh the cost of a difficult opening run. Klopp’s own early unpredictability at Anfield eventually gave way to two domestic titles, a Champions League, and a period of sustained dominance. Whether the club’s ownership applies that lesson to Iraola’s tenure will go a long way to defining Liverpool’s next chapter.
