Klopp agrees terms to become Germany head coach in deal running to 2030 World Cup
Jürgen Klopp has reached an agreement in principle with the DFB to become Germany's next head coach, with DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke travelling to New York to finalise the primary terms of a contract expected to run until the 2030 World Cup.
Jürgen Klopp is set to return to management as Germany’s next head coach after reaching an agreement in principle with the DFB, according to Sky Sports Germany. DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke travelled to New York to meet the 59-year-old and iron out the primary terms of a deal expected to run through to the 2030 World Cup.
The breakthrough ends months of speculation over Klopp’s future following his departure from Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 season. Germany have been searching for a new direction after a disappointing World Cup campaign under Julian Nagelsmann, and Klopp has been the DFB’s primary target throughout the process.
One significant obstacle remains before the appointment can be made official. Klopp is currently contracted as Head of Global Soccer for the Red Bull group, and discussions with Red Bull chief Oliver Mintzlaff are scheduled for early next week in New York to resolve the terms of his exit. The DFB is reportedly exploring an arrangement that would allow Klopp to continue as a Red Bull brand ambassador while simultaneously serving as Germany head coach — a compromise that would negate the need for a substantial compensation payment.
Once confirmed, Klopp is expected to oversee a sweeping overhaul of the existing coaching staff. Peter Krawietz and Pepijn Lijnders — his two most trusted assistants throughout his trophy-laden tenure at Liverpool — are among those anticipated to join the new setup, signalling a sharp tactical shift for Die Mannschaft.
The DFB intends to formally announce the appointment as soon as the final paperwork with Red Bull is signed.
