Arsenal push for quick Julian Alvarez deal after PSG shut door on Barcola move
Arsenal have made Julian Alvarez their primary attacking target this summer and are pushing to finalise a deal before pre-season, after PSG confirmed Bradley Barcola is unavailable for transfer.
Arsenal are accelerating their pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, with the club now treating the Argentina international as their top attacking priority after Paris Saint-Germain made clear that Bradley Barcola will not be sold this summer.
The Gunners had been monitoring both Alvarez and PSG winger Barcola as potential additions ahead of next season, but the European champions’ decision to retain Barcola has narrowed Arsenal’s focus. According to the Independent, Arsenal are now pushing for a quick deal for Alvarez, with the aim of completing a transfer before pre-season gets underway.
Alvarez, 26, has publicly stated his desire to leave Atletico Madrid. Speaking earlier this summer, he said: “I spoke with people at the club, with those I had to speak with and the best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream. It’s not the time to talk about this, but I also can’t hide it. I try to be an honest person.”
The striker carries a reported release clause of €500 million (£432m), though Atletico are understood to be seeking in excess of £100m in a realistic transfer. Arsenal have previously been reluctant to go beyond £90m, leaving a gap that the two clubs will need to bridge.
Barcelona had also entered the race, reportedly offering Ferran Torres plus cash to Atletico in a part-exchange proposal, but that approach was turned down. Spanish radio station COPE reports that Atletico are now refusing to negotiate further with Barcelona and are instead working directly with Arsenal on a deal — a development that represents a significant boost to the Gunners’ chances.
Barcola had endured limited playing time at PSG last season, which had prompted both Arsenal and Liverpool to explore his availability. However, PSG’s stance appears firm for now, with the suggestion that circumstances could change after the 2026 World Cup — too late to fit Arsenal’s current timeline.
With competition for Alvarez appearing to ease and Atletico’s preference shifting toward Arsenal, the north London club are well-positioned to land their man, provided the two clubs can agree on a fee.
