Southampton have handed a permanent academy role to Will Salt, the intern whose covert scouting missions triggered the Spygate scandal that saw the club expelled from the Championship play-offs.

Salt came to public attention after Saints head coach Tonda Eckert instructed him to spy on several Championship opponents, including Middlesbrough ahead of their play-off semi-final. Southampton won that tie but were subsequently thrown out of the play-offs as punishment, ending their bid for an immediate return to the Premier League.

Eckert drew widespread criticism for his role in the affair and claimed he had been unaware that such surveillance was prohibited under English football rules. He nonetheless kept his job after receiving the backing of Southampton owner Dragan Solak.

According to the Daily Mail, Eckert was impressed with Salt’s broader work during his time at the club, and the intern has now been retained in a permanent capacity within the Southampton academy despite the controversy surrounding his involvement.

Southampton later admitted that Eckert had ordered spying operations against Oxford, Ipswich, and Middlesbrough. The club accepted a punishment but publicly stated they considered the sanction — expulsion from the play-offs — to be excessive.

The scandal unravelled in part because Salt used a personal bank card to purchase a coffee at a café adjacent to Middlesbrough’s training ground, a detail that helped expose the operation. Middlesbrough, despite being the aggrieved party, were reinstated into the play-offs and reached the Wembley final, where they were beaten by Hull City, who secured promotion despite having finished sixth in the regular season.

Eckert subsequently released a lengthy video apology, saying: “For everything that’s happened, I do want to apologise, and I hold my hand up because as a head coach, I am responsible. I am responsible for everything that has happened in this football club. I am responsible for everything that has happened in my coaching staff.”
