United set for double sell-on windfall as Garnacho exit looms and Greenwood transfer agreed
Manchester United stand to earn significant sell-on fees from two former players this summer. Chelsea are prepared to sell Alejandro Garnacho for around £42.5m, while Fenerbahce have reportedly agreed a deal worth up to €42m for Mason Greenwood from Marseille.
Manchester United are poised to collect substantial sell-on fees from the potential departures of Alejandro Garnacho and Mason Greenwood, with agreements reportedly in place that could net the club more than £25m in combined windfall income this summer.
Garnacho, who joined Chelsea from Old Trafford last summer for £40m, struggled to make an impact at Stamford Bridge as the Blues finished tenth in the Premier League and missed out on European football entirely. The Press Association has reported that Chelsea are willing to sell the 22-year-old Argentine and will consider offers in the region of £42.5m. United negotiated a 10 per cent sell-on clause in last year’s deal, meaning they would be entitled to a cut of any future fee Chelsea receive.
Reports from Italy suggest Roma are interested in Garnacho, with Champions League qualification potentially giving the Serie A club the financial means to pursue a permanent deal, though they would prefer a loan arrangement with an option to buy. Because Garnacho joined United from Atletico Madrid for just £100,000 in 2020, the original £40m Chelsea fee was recorded as pure profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules — and any sell-on income would be treated the same way.
On the Greenwood front, ESPN has reported that both Fenerbahce and Atletico Madrid have reached agreements with Marseille over a transfer. United sold Greenwood to the French club in the summer of 2024 and retained a sell-on clause understood to be between 40 and 50 per cent of any future fee. Should Greenwood move to Fenerbahce for a reported €40m plus €2m in bonuses, United would pocket approximately €14m (£11.9m). A return to Atletico Madrid — where he previously spent time on loan at Getafe — would yield around €15.7m (£13.3m).
Greenwood has been in outstanding form for Marseille, scoring 48 goals in 81 appearances. His performances prompted former Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi to make a bold assessment of the forward’s ceiling. “I see him every day, he has huge potential. I don’t see any other players in Europe at the same level,” De Zerbi said. “He has the potential to win the Ballon d’Or.”
