Kevin Keegan publicly confirmed he has stage-four cancer during an appearance at the Tyne Theatre in Newcastle over the weekend, giving supporters their first detailed account of his condition since his diagnosis was announced in January 2025.

The 75-year-old former Newcastle, Manchester City and England manager had been receiving treatment since earlier this year, when his family released a statement through Newcastle United confirming he was dealing with cancer. The news prompted widespread support from across the football community.

Speaking at the event — organised to allow Keegan to reflect on his career with supporters — he disclosed the severity of his diagnosis and described meeting the specialist overseeing his treatment. Quoted by The Mail, Keegan said: “They said we have a top doctor with this new way of fighting what you have got. Which is stage four cancer. He was a Liverpool supporter so I went to meet him. I knew I wouldn’t be walking alone, if you know what I mean.”

Stage four is the most advanced classification of cancer, indicating the disease has spread beyond its original site. Despite that, Keegan appeared in good spirits throughout the evening, delivering the kind of self-deprecating humour that has long defined his public persona.

He recounted the moment his doctor outlined the treatment’s success rate with characteristic wit: “I said: ‘Fantastic! What is your strike rate?’ He said: ‘33 per cent’. Oh. I thought he might say 80, maybe 90! Anyway, I am still here at the moment…”

Keegan had recorded a brief video message ahead of the event before making the appearance in person, suggesting his condition had not prevented him from engaging publicly. His playing career took in spells at Liverpool and Newcastle among others before he moved into management, where he became one of the most recognisable figures in English football during the 1990s.
