Keane tells red-carded Foden to 'get on the bus' after taunting United fans at Old Trafford

Roy Keane has publicly called out Phil Foden for taunting Manchester United fans outside Old Trafford after Manchester City’s controversial 1-0 derby win on Sunday — despite Foden having been dismissed in the 23rd minute for a kick on Bruno Fernandes.

Foden was walking back to City’s team bus at full-time when he responded to jeers from United supporters on the forecourt by holding up a ‘1-0’ gesture with his hands. The moment drew a sharp rebuke from Keane on the Stick to Football podcast.

“Did you see him the other day walking onto the bus?” the former United captain said. “He’s holding his fingers up showing 1-0 to the United fans.” When co-host Jill Scott argued that Foden was simply reacting to abuse from the crowd, Keane was unmoved: “You’ve just been sent off, what are you doing? Get on the bus.”

Scott pushed back, saying: “You do react and he is a big City fan. I think he’s being a fan as he’s walking through there.” Keane did not relent.

The criticism carries a degree of irony given Keane’s own assessment of the red card at half-time on Sunday, when he argued Foden had been harshly treated. “Bruno is the one who is violent,” Keane said at the time. “I don’t think that’s a red card.” He added that Fernandes had given Foden a kick on the ground before the retaliation, suggesting both players were culpable.

City’s win itself remained mired in controversy. Erling Haaland’s decisive strike should have been ruled out for offside, but a VAR error allowed the goal to stand, handing City all three points in circumstances that left United aggrieved.

Foden’s afternoon was compounded further when he was omitted from the England squad following the sending off, leaving the 26-year-old with little to celebrate beyond the result itself — a point Keane appeared to feel made the taunting all the more ill-judged.
