Hat-trick, penalty won, assist: Olise single-handedly crushes Union Berlin

Michael Olise delivered a masterclass on Friday night, scoring a hat-trick and providing an assist as Bayern Munich crushed Union Berlin 7-0 in the opening match of Matchday 4 in the Bundesliga.

The former Crystal Palace player had recently made headlines for his criticism of Bundesliga defenders and an attitude deemed dismissive in interviews. On the pitch, his response was emphatic. Olise opened his account with a near-post finish after a poorly cleared free kick by the Berlin defence (43’). He then doubled his tally with a right-footed strike after rounding the opposing goalkeeper, following a through ball from Tom Bischof (73’), before completing his hat-trick with a thunderbolt of a left-footed shot from a one-two with Bischof (76’).

His influence on the match went far beyond his three goals. It was Olise who won the penalty converted by Harry Kane (39’), and his cross found the head of the English international for Bayern’s fifth goal (54’). Of Bayern’s seven goals, only strikes from Jamal Musiala (18’) and Ismail Saibari (70’) did not bear his direct mark.

With 8 goals and 3 assists in seven matches across all competitions this season, Olise joins the French national team gathering on Monday at Clairefontaine in sparkling form. Less positive news for Bayern: Dayot Upamecano, cautioned late in the first half, was substituted at half-time.
