Brentford sweep Chelsea aside 3-0 to stay unbeaten in the Premier League

Brentford handed Chelsea a third consecutive Premier League defeat, running out convincing 3-0 winners at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday. Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho all struck in the second half to keep Keith Andrews’ side unbeaten in the league.

Xabi Alonso had reason to feel encouraged by Chelsea’s first-half display. A reshuffled midfield featuring Jordan Henderson and Valentin Barco — both making their first Premier League starts — looked organised and physically competitive, while the visitors limited Brentford to a single shot on target before the break. Henderson, appearing for the first time since coming off the bench for England against Panama in June, was a vocal and commanding presence alongside Barco.

Yet the familiar defensive lapses that have haunted Chelsea this season resurfaced after the hour mark. A poorly defended corner from Mikkel Damsgaard on 61 minutes left two Brentford players completely unmarked; Jannik Schuster headed back across goal and Anthony nodded in from close range. The second arrived shortly after when Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana were split by a simple through ball, leaving Thiago free to convert after Kevin Schade’s initial shot was saved.

Carvalho completed the rout in stoppage time, turning in a low cross from Schade to send the home supporters into celebration.

Chelsea’s best moments came through Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers, but the absence of the injured Joao Pedro was keenly felt. Danny Welbeck, drafted in as replacement, showed clever footwork early on to set up Pedro Neto, whose driven effort was well saved by Caoimhin Kelleher, yet he struggled to replicate the fluid link play Pedro provides between the attacking trio.

Brentford’s victory extends their unbeaten start to the Premier League season and underlines the progress made under Andrews, while Chelsea’s search for consistency under Alonso continues.
