Keane takes aim at Maguire after England squad omission sparks public outburst
Roy Keane has suggested players who miss out on a 26-man England squad have only themselves to blame, comments widely seen as directed at Harry Maguire, who went public with his frustration before Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad was announced.
Roy Keane has publicly questioned players who complain about missing England squads, remarks that appear squarely aimed at Harry Maguire after the Manchester United centre-back vented his frustration on social media ahead of Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man World Cup selection.
Maguire posted his disappointment the day before the squad was announced, writing that he had been “left shocked and gutted” by the decision and believed he “could have played a major part this summer” after a strong season. Tuchel admitted the public statement left him “a bit surprised”.
Speaking as a pundit during England’s friendly against New Zealand, Keane was asked about the notable absentees — among them Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Morgan Gibbs-White — but it was Maguire’s very public reaction that appeared to frame his answer.
“If you can’t get into a squad of 26, that’s on you,” Keane said. “You’ve not done enough to convince that manager. There will always be uproar with England for players that are left out if they play for certain clubs, but that’s on you — don’t blame anyone else.”
As the only player to openly express his grievance before the squad was confirmed, Maguire was the obvious target of those remarks. Keane has form here: he previously mocked the defender during punditry and once said on air that he “wouldn’t listen too much to what Harry has got to say.” He did acknowledge last year that he had “crossed the line” and reached out to apologise.
The episode is the latest in a pattern of Keane using his punditry platform to criticise current and former Manchester United players. Over the past month he has repeatedly taken aim at captain Bruno Fernandes, at one point misquoting him in an attempt to make his argument — a claim Fernandes publicly described as a “lie.” Rather than apologise, Keane responded by mocking another United player on social media.
Whether Keane’s comments about the England squad constitute a fresh front in his running critique of United’s current crop, or simply reflect his long-held view that players should take personal responsibility, the timing ensures Maguire will once again find himself in the crosshairs of his former captain.
