Manchester United will pocket approximately £10.5 million from Mason Greenwood’s transfer from Marseille to Fenerbahce, after sell-on and sub-clause obligations are settled. The reported £33.2 million deal triggers a 40 per cent sell-on fee United inserted when Greenwood left Old Trafford for Marseille for £26.6 million in 2024, generating around £13.3 million for the club before deductions.

However, United are obligated to pass on 20 per cent of that figure — approximately £2.7 million — to Getafe, the Spanish club where Greenwood spent the 2023/24 season on loan. That agreement was put in place as part of the arrangement surrounding his move to Getafe following his arrest in January 2022 on suspicion of attempted rape, assault, and controlling behaviour. The case was subsequently dropped, with Greenwood denying all allegations.

Because Greenwood is a product of United’s academy, both the original sale fee and the sell-on proceeds are classified as pure profit under the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), providing a meaningful boost to the club’s financial position. United have already spent £85 million on midfielders Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, and the additional funds will further strengthen the budget available to manager Michael Carrick.

Greenwood, now 24, has been in prolific form since leaving Old Trafford. He scored 10 goals and registered six assists in 36 appearances during his loan at Getafe, before going on to contribute 48 goals and 17 assists in 81 appearances across all competitions over two seasons at Marseille.

Former Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi, now at Tottenham, was effusive in his praise of the forward late last year. “I see him every day, he has huge potential. I don’t see any other players in Europe at the same level,” De Zerbi said. “He has the potential to win the Ballon d’Or. It will be up to him to decide whether he wants to do everything he can to fight for it or not.”

De Zerbi did add a note of caution, urging Greenwood to sharpen his consistency and pressing work rate, but the underlying assessment was one of a player operating among Europe’s elite forwards.
