Kansas City jazz clubs and £1,100 wine bottles await England's families at World Cup 2026 base
England's players and their families will be based in Kansas City, Missouri, for the 2026 World Cup, with the FA selecting the self-styled Soccer Capital of America as their hub from June 13.
England’s players and their families will be headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, for the 2026 World Cup, with Thomas Tuchel’s squad arriving in the region on June 13 and potentially remaining there for over a month depending on their progress in the tournament.
The FA chose the location partly because of Kansas City’s reputation as the Soccer Capital of America — a nickname locals embrace with genuine pride. The squad itself will be housed in Prairie Village, a leafy, affluent suburb described as an ideal retreat from the spotlight, known for its upscale outdoor shopping boutiques, pilates studios and gourmet juice bars.
For those looking to venture further afield, Kansas City offers considerably more than suburban calm. Local reporter and author Nate Bukaty outlined the city’s appeal, pointing to its world-class barbecue scene and a deep-rooted jazz heritage that stretches back to the early twentieth century.
“Obviously, you’ve got to go get some barbecue because this is the greatest barbecue city in the world,” Bukaty said. “One thing I would point out is that this is a city with an incredibly deep connection to jazz. Charlie Parker is from Kansas City. There are some really cool jazz clubs in town — one’s called the Green Lady Lounge and you’ve got the Black Dolphin. They honour that jazz tradition.”
Both the Green Lady Lounge and its sister venue, the Black Dolphin Lounge, rank among the city’s premier live music destinations. Their drinks menus stretch to a $474 (£351) bottle of Dom Perignon 2013 Champagne for those inclined to celebrate in style.
The nearby Crossroads District adds a further layer of high-end dining to the options available. The rustic restaurant Lazia features a $1,515 (£1,126) bottle of Vietti Villero Riserva Barolo 2016 at the top of its wine list — a figure that underlines just how lavish the surroundings can be for those willing to spend.
Sporting KC legend and former United States international Matt Besler, who knows the area well, believes the England party will settle in comfortably and enjoy their time in the region.
