Kane's header rescues England from embarrassment against 85th-ranked New Zealand

Harry Kane’s 47th-minute header was the only thing separating England from a deeply uncomfortable result against New Zealand in their World Cup warm-up in Tampa on Saturday, with Thomas Tuchel’s side labouring to a 1-0 victory in front of 25,889 fans in sweltering Florida heat.

New Zealand sit 85th in the FIFA world rankings — below Haiti and Curacao — yet it took a Kane glance from Djed Spence’s cross just before the interval to break the deadlock. Tuchel then swapped the entire XI at half-time, with player workloads being carefully managed in temperatures that reached 33 degrees Celsius.

The second half brought little improvement in quality. England were awarded a penalty for a foul on Ivan Toney, only for the offside flag to overrule the decision, and the most notable moment of the second period was a senior debut for Liverpool’s 17-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha — the youngest player on the pitch by some distance.

Heat was the defining theme of the afternoon. Tuchel had spoken before kick-off about England’s preparations with Team GB, including fitness trackers, cooling vests and palm cooling devices, and expressed optimism about maintaining a high press in the conditions. That press never materialised. England’s intensity was limited throughout, and the substitution of an entire XI at the break underlined just how carefully the coaching staff are managing workloads ahead of the tournament proper.

The pitch itself drew concern before a ball was kicked. Former England striker Ian Wright described it as “very uneven and very dry” and questioned whether it was appropriate for players at this stage of a World Cup. No injuries resulted, but the surface contributed to a disjointed spectacle.

England’s first-half lineup read: Pickford; Stones, Guehi, Quansah, Spence; Henderson, Mainoo, Rogers; Rashford, Watkins, Kane. The second half saw: Trafford; James, Konsa, Burn, Livramento; Bellingham, Anderson, O’Reilly; Gordon, Ngumoha, Toney.

Another friendly against Costa Rica follows on Wednesday, with the Arsenal contingent expected to be available after their domestic commitments. England then open their Group L campaign against Croatia on June 17.
