Kane targets World Cup Golden Boot as Messi, Mbappe and Haaland fire opening salvos
Harry Kane heads into England's World Cup opener against Croatia acutely aware of the competition for the Golden Boot, with Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi — who equalled Miroslav Klose's record of 16 World Cup goals — all scoring in the tournament's opening games.
Harry Kane sat in a pre-match press conference ahead of England’s World Cup opener against Croatia on Tuesday knowing exactly what he was up against. Erling Haaland had just scored twice in Norway’s 4-1 win over Iraq. Kylian Mbappe had netted a brace for France. And then Lionel Messi went and scored a hat-trick against Algeria, equalling Miroslav Klose’s all-time World Cup record of 16 goals.
The race for the Golden Boot is already in full sprint, and Kane is under no illusions about the calibre of the field. Asked by a Swedish journalist to name the tournament’s best strikers — a question that conveniently followed Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres both scoring against Tunisia — Kane was diplomatic but direct.
“If you look at the one playing right now, Erling, and Mbappe scoring a couple for France earlier, they’ve both had fantastic years as goalscorers and strikers, two of the top, top players,” Kane said. “They’ve obviously both started the tournament really well today, so yeah, apart from Sweden, I’ll probably vote with those two as two of the best in the World Cup.”
What Kane did not mention — though his rivals are surely aware — is that he scored 61 goals for Bayern Munich this season, a tally that outstrips anything Mbappe, Haaland or Messi managed in their respective leagues. Haaland, for his part, acknowledged Messi’s hat-trick on social media with a simple verdict: “Messi is a madman.”
Wayne Rooney has called Kane England’s greatest ever player, and the statistical record makes a compelling case. According to Understat, Kane outstripped his expected Bundesliga goals by 6.42 last season. The pattern is consistent: he exceeded his xG by 1.16 the season before, by 2.88 the season before that, and by 6.94 in his final campaign at Tottenham. You have to go back five years to find a season in which Kane did not outscore his expected goals — a level of sustained finishing efficiency that even Cristiano Ronaldo, who has tracked broadly in line with his xG across his career, has not matched.
A closer look at Kane’s 36 Bundesliga goals this season reveals the full arsenal. He is composed from the penalty spot, mixing a stutter run-up with a more traditional technique to keep goalkeepers guessing. His aerial ability is reliable. His left foot is a genuine threat. His right foot, however, is the standout weapon — a combination of vicious power and clinical accuracy that he deploys with precision inside the box, while opting for curling finishes with more finesse when shooting from distance.
England’s campaign begins against Croatia, and Kane will be expected to lead the line as both captain and chief goal threat. With Messi, Mbappe and Haaland already on the board, the pressure — and the opportunity — could hardly be greater.
