Harry Kane equalled two England records in the Three Lions’ 4-2 victory over Croatia in Dallas on Wednesday, matching David Beckham’s 115-cap tally to move joint third on the all-time list behind Peter Shilton and Wayne Rooney, and drawing level with Gary Lineker’s ten World Cup goals.

Kane revealed it was Beckham himself who was first to reach out, sending a voice note both before and after the game. “David sent me a nice voice note yesterday before the game and then after the game, congratulating me on getting to 115,” Kane told the FA’s Lions’ Den show. “He said he knows how hard it is to be that consistent and get that many caps, so it was really nice of him.”

For Kane, the milestone carries a personal weight that goes beyond statistics. Beckham and the Bayern Munich striker grew up in the same area — Chingford — and attended the same school, making the former England captain a formative idol. “Now to have the same number of caps as him is pretty mind-blowing, to be honest,” Kane said. “I don’t take a lot of this stuff in, I just get on to the next thing, and it’s something I will take in when I stop and look back on.”

Kane was equally effusive about Beckham’s continued connection with the national team. “Whenever I’ve met or spoke to him, he’s been so good. You can tell he’s such a fan of the team — he wants us to do really well. It is a bit of a full circle moment because he’s watching us as a fan, and I’m sure we’ll be the same in 20 years or so. What a great role model for all of us.”

On matching Lineker’s World Cup goals record, Kane acknowledged the significance while keeping his focus firmly on what comes next. “Everyone knows how good a striker Gary was, especially in World Cups, so to get to ten goals is obviously really pleasing,” he said. “The next game is just a few days away and I’m feeling good, feeling ready — I just can’t wait to get going again.”

With both records now within reach of being broken outright, Kane enters England’s next fixture as the sole holder of neither landmark — but with the chance to stand alone at the top of both.
