Kane leads Ballon d'Or 2026 contenders as 30-man shortlist is revealed for London ceremony

The 30-man shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d’Or has been announced ahead of the ceremony in London on Monday 26 October, with Bayern Munich and England striker Harry Kane emerging as the odds-on favourite to claim the prestigious prize.

Kane, 33, scored 73 goals for club and country across a remarkable season and would become the first English player to win the men’s award since Michael Owen in 2001 should he take the golden ball. The one question mark hanging over his candidacy is the absence of a major trophy — a factor that has historically weighed against individual nominees.

Defending champion Rodri is also on the list after guiding Spain to World Cup glory and claiming the tournament’s Golden Ball award. Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe enters the reckoning having broken the World Cup goalscoring record with 10 goals across the tournament, while Paris Saint-Germain winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who sat out the World Cup, made his case through a standout Champions League campaign as PSG retained their European title.

The full 30-man shortlist features players from across Europe and beyond. Jude Bellingham, Lamine Yamal, Erling Haaland, Vinicius Jr and Lionel Messi are among the other prominent names included, alongside Arsenal duo Declan Rice and William Saliba, and Manchester City’s Rodri — listed with his new club Barcelona following a summer move.

The women’s nominees were also released alongside the men’s shortlist, with the ceremony set to take place in London next month.
