Mount backs Man United's £155m midfield overhaul despite his own fight for minutes

Mason Mount has endorsed Manchester United’s £155 million midfield rebuild this summer, describing the heightened competition for places as a necessity for raising standards at Old Trafford — despite the fact he has yet to play a minute of football this season.

The former Chelsea midfielder, who joined United for an initial £55 million three summers ago, has seen Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba all arrive at the club in a concentrated spending spree. Baleba, signed from Brighton, is still awaiting his debut after arriving with an injury, while Tielemans and Santos have already begun to establish themselves under manager Michael Carrick.

Writing in the pre-match programme, Mount said: “The additions within the squad really improve the squad. The competition for places is high, and I think that’s a must-have, because it ups the level, ups everyone’s level within the team. Game by game, you’re competing during the week and training to get into the team and start the game, so everyone’s got to be ready. That definitely improves the standard. You can see it already — the standard in training has gone up, so that will only improve the squad as a whole.”

The comments carry a certain weight given Mount’s own difficult trajectory at United. Injuries, inconsistent form and an inability to nail down a fixed position have restricted him to just 25 Premier League starts across three seasons — fewer than he would routinely manage in a single campaign during his best years at Chelsea. He has scored seven goals for the club and has also dropped out of the England reckoning after once being a fixture in the national side.

Mount was an unused substitute in United’s 2-2 draw at Everton and faces a crowded picture in the middle of the park. Bruno Fernandes remains the team’s creative hub, while Kobbie Mainoo has established himself as a key figure alongside the three new arrivals. Wide options Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have also been used centrally at times, further narrowing Mount’s avenues back into the side.

His next opportunity to force his way into contention could come in United’s Champions League fixture against Sabah, though his precise role within Carrick’s plans remains unclear.
