Premier League moves Christmas fixture release forward after Manchester United pressure
The Premier League will publish its December fixture schedule earlier than last season after clubs including Manchester United lobbied for an earlier announcement, giving supporters more time to plan travel over the festive period.
The Premier League is set to release its Christmas fixture schedule on Thursday, more than a month earlier than last season, following lobbying from clubs including Manchester United.
United officials met with the Premier League and broadcasters to argue that December’s fixture decisions should be confirmed well in advance, with the stated aim of making travel planning easier for fans. That push appears to have succeeded, with the announcement brought forward significantly compared to last season’s 15 October release date.
The Football Supporters’ Association is also understood to have been involved in the discussions, adding further weight to the case for an earlier announcement.
All matches will initially be listed with a 3pm Saturday kick-off, though those times remain subject to change once broadcasters select which games they wish to televise.
Boxing Day this year falls on a Saturday, meaning several fixtures are expected to be played on 26 December, with a number of them potentially kicking off at the traditional 3pm slot. Last season, United’s home fixture against Newcastle United was the only Boxing Day game scheduled for an 8pm kick-off — a decision that drew criticism from supporters who had made travel arrangements around an earlier start.
The earlier release is a notable shift in how the Premier League manages its festive scheduling communications, and reflects growing pressure from clubs and fan groups to give supporters greater certainty during one of the busiest and most expensive periods of the football calendar.
