Kai Rooney is generating genuine buzz at Manchester United ahead of pre-season, with the 16-year-old forward’s visible physical transformation prompting supporters to speculate about a potential first-team push next season.

The son of United legend Wayne Rooney posted an image to his Instagram Stories this week appearing to show a man flexing his bicep in the gym. Supporters were initially divided over whether Kai was the subject of the photo, but he subsequently confirmed in a follow-up post that it was indeed him — a revelation that only amplified the excitement around the teenager’s prospects.

Rooney was sidelined for the closing months of the 2025/26 campaign after making his Under-18s debut in January, and the time away from the pitch appears to have been spent building his physique in preparation for what could be a pivotal year. At his age, adding muscle ahead of a potential step up to senior football is a logical and widely expected development.

New United manager Michael Carrick, confirmed as the club’s permanent boss in May, is understood to be familiar with Kai’s ability, having monitored the Under-18s closely last season — a connection made more personal by the fact that Carrick’s own son Jacey has progressed through the same academy system. Carrick may look to hand Rooney opportunities in domestic cup competitions as a first step toward senior involvement, following a path similar to that taken by recent academy graduates Shea Lacey and JJ Gabriel.

Fan reaction on social media has been enthusiastic. One supporter wrote on X: “Kai Rooney will be the only player to ever match or surpass his father’s superstar status, records, and achievements in football history.” Another added: “Damn, how did we get from this to that in three months — this kid wants to oppress defenders like his father did.”

While Kai has already passed the age at which he could have broken David Gaskell’s record as United’s youngest-ever player — a mark that has stood since 1955 — there remain plenty of other milestones within reach if he continues on his current trajectory. United’s long tradition of promoting academy talent gives the younger Rooney a credible pathway, and the combination of his surname, his evident dedication, and Carrick’s watchful eye suggests his moment may not be far away.
