Jordan leave spotless dressing room and gifts for staff after World Cup elimination
Jordan were knocked out of the 2026 World Cup after a 2-1 defeat to Algeria, but the nation's first-ever World Cup appearance ended with a viral moment: a pristine dressing room, traditional sweets, and a heartfelt thank-you note left for stadium staff in San Francisco.
Jordan’s debut World Cup campaign ended in the group stage, but the nation left a lasting impression far beyond the pitch after footage of their immaculate dressing room at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium spread widely on social media.
Drawn in Group J, Jordan lost their opening match to Austria before facing Algeria knowing that only a win would keep their tournament hopes alive. Nizar Al-Rashdan gave Jamal Sellami’s side the lead in the first half, but Algeria fought back after the break. Nadhir Benbouali equalised before Amine Gouiri completed the comeback in the 82nd minute to seal a 2-1 victory. The result confirmed Jordan’s elimination — even a shock win over reigning champions Argentina in their final group game could not lift them above Austria or Algeria on head-to-head record.
Despite the disappointment, Jordan’s players ensured the dressing room was left in pristine condition. The team also left traditional Jordanian sweets and other gifts for stadium staff, along with a handwritten note of thanks.
The message, shared in a video posted by FIFA, read: “Thank you for helping to make Jordan’s first FIFA World Cup experience a truly unforgettable one. Your dedication, professionalism, and warm hospitality have contributed to a memorable occasion for our team and supporters. As a small gesture of appreciation, we are pleased to share with you some of Jordan’s traditional sweets, a taste of our rich traditions and renowned hospitality. With our sincere gratitude and best wishes, Team Jordan.”
The gesture resonated with football supporters around the world. Among the responses to FIFA’s post, one user wrote: “Lost the match but won our hearts.” Another added: “This is a great culture. Much respect Team Jordan.”
Jordanian fans were equally moved. “This is our culture and tradition in Jordan,” one supporter wrote. “We’ve been taught to leave every place better than we found it. This is what we do wherever we go and whenever we represent our beloved country, Jordan. That’s why we’re proudly called the Nashama.”
Jordan still have one group game remaining against Argentina, but their World Cup journey — historic as the nation’s first — will be remembered as much for this act of hospitality as for anything that happened on the field.
