JJ Gabriel agrees Real Madrid move as Manchester United lose teenage prodigy for £300,000
Sixteen-year-old JJ Gabriel has reportedly reached a full agreement to join Real Madrid, with Fabrizio Romano confirming his representatives have informed all interested clubs. Manchester United stand to receive only around £300,000 in compensation.
JJ Gabriel is set to leave Manchester United for Real Madrid in a deal that could be finalised as early as January, with transfer insider Fabrizio Romano reporting that the 16-year-old’s representatives have formally notified all interested clubs of his decision.
United will receive a minimal compensation fee of around £300,000 for a player they have developed since the age of 11 — a figure dwarfed by the £8.5 million contract Gabriel is expected to sign at the Bernabéu. Real Madrid are understood to be the only club willing to meet that financial package, with Barcelona reportedly falling short and Gabriel himself turning down Paris Saint-Germain to pursue a move to Spain.
The saga began in September when Gabriel stunned United by requesting his registration be cancelled, which would have made him a free agent. He refused to train with the first team ahead of a planned senior debut against Brighton in the League Cup, and has not appeared in a United shirt or trained at Carrington since. His last appearance for the club came in an Under-19s fixture against Sabah, in which he scored a hat-trick.
Gabriel has been training in Spain for the past six weeks as interest from Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and PSG circled. However, Real Madrid have moved to the front of the queue, with sources indicating the transfer is at an advanced stage — though it must still satisfy FIFA’s strict regulations governing moves involving minors.
Manchester United have been caught off guard by the pace of developments, according to the Manchester Evening News. Sources close to the club insist no direct contact between United and Real Madrid has yet been made, suggesting the deal has been driven almost entirely from Gabriel’s side.
Gabriel, who turns 17 in October 2027, has secured both a Cypriot and an Irish passport — through his mother and paternal grandmother respectively — which will assist in completing a move outside the United Kingdom. United had previously offered him a scholarship that would have converted into a professional contract on his 17th birthday, but the forward appears determined to pursue his career elsewhere.
The case is a significant blow for United’s academy, which has invested heavily in Gabriel since he joined as an 11-year-old, and raises further questions about the club’s ability to retain elite young talent.
