Matthias Jaissle is Newcastle United’s new head coach ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season, replacing Eddie Howe following the Englishman’s departure by mutual consent in July. The German will take charge for the first time when Newcastle open their campaign against Liverpool at St James’ Park.

Who is Matthias Jaissle?

Jaissle built his reputation at Red Bull Salzburg before moving to Saudi Arabia to manage Al-Ahli. Newcastle moved to bring him to the Premier League this summer, making him the first German head coach in the club’s history. His only senior signing so far is defender Amar Dedic, signed from Benfica for £29.5 million.

Why did Eddie Howe leave?

Howe cited a need to “recharge and take a break” when he stepped down in July. Reports pointed to the sustained loss of key players over recent seasons as a significant factor in his decision to resign. His entire backroom staff — Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches, Simon Weatherstone and Dan Hodges — also left the club when he departed.

A squad transformed

The scale of Newcastle’s summer rebuild extends well beyond the dugout. Sandro Tonali has joined Tottenham, Bruno Guimaraes has moved to Arsenal, Anthony Gordon has signed for Barcelona, and Kieran Trippier has dropped into the Championship with Wolves. The departures represent a near-complete dismantling of the core that Howe assembled during his tenure.

Jaissle now faces the task of integrating new faces and establishing his own identity at the club before the season opener against Liverpool — a fixture that will offer an early measure of how quickly Newcastle can adapt to life under their new manager.
