Anderson limps off on debut as Man City's midfield crisis deepens against Bournemouth
Elliot Anderson, City's £116m club-record signing from Nottingham Forest, was forced off after the hour mark in his Premier League debut against Bournemouth following a collision with Alex Scott, adding to a growing list of midfield concerns at the Etihad.
Elliot Anderson’s Premier League debut for Manchester City ended prematurely when the £116 million midfielder was forced off injured during the home fixture against Bournemouth, deepening the club’s already significant problems in the centre of the park.
Anderson, a club-record signing from Nottingham Forest in the summer, went down just after the hour mark following a collision with Bournemouth’s Alex Scott. He received treatment on the pitch before being replaced by Mateo Kovacic. The England international was able to walk off under his own power, and the injury appeared to be more of a knock than a serious concern.
The timing is nonetheless awkward for City. The departures of Rodri and Bernardo Silva have left the squad thin in midfield, and manager Enzo Maresca was already forced into an unconventional solution against Bournemouth, deploying defender Marc Guehi in central midfield alongside Anderson. Nico O’Reilly played further forward, with Kovacic and out-of-favour Nico Gonzalez among the options from the bench.
Gonzalez could leave before the transfer window closes, with Newcastle United reported to be interested in the midfielder. His potential departure would stretch City’s options even further.
The club has moved to address the situation in the market. City have agreed a deal to sign 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille for £84.1 million, with a five-year contract — plus an option for a sixth year — signalling their intent to build around the teenager long-term. Bouaddi represents the next major piece of City’s midfield rebuild.
Further additions before the window shuts remain likely. Tijjani Reijnders has already left the club, Savinho has agreed a move to Tottenham, and Omar Marmoush is also reported to be weighing up a departure, leaving City’s squad in a state of considerable flux heading into the second half of the season.
